Gutter Cleaning in Anacortes, WA

The short answer

Anacortes gutters fill fastest where houses back onto trees, and the city has more than 2,950 acres of community forest inside its limits. We clear troughs by hand, bag the debris, flush and check every downspout, and aim to finish before November and December, the wettest months on the town's long weather record.

Gutters on Fidalgo Island do not all fill at the same rate. A house on open ground by the water can go a year between clean-outs with nothing more than windblown dust in the trough. A house backing onto woodland can fill its gutters in a single autumn and overflow by Christmas.

Most of the work in Anacortes is working out which of those two you have, and setting the visits to match.

Why do Anacortes gutters fill the way they do?

Trees, mainly. The Anacortes Community Forest Lands cover more than 2,950 acres inside the city, with over 50 miles of trail running through them, and homes near the edges of that ground live with its leaf fall. Away from the forest, plenty of private lots carry mature trees of their own.

What comes off those trees ends up in the trough: leaves, needles, cones, twigs, seed pods and fine organic matter that breaks down into a dark silt. Leaves are the obvious problem, but they are not the worst one. Needles and silt pack together at the bottom of the gutter and at the downspout outlet, forming a mat that lets water pool behind it. That is why a gutter can look clear from the lawn and still overflow in the first heavy rain.

Moss on the roof adds to the load. As it dries and loosens, clumps wash down into the gutters and lodge at the outlets. On a house with a mossy roof and trees overhead, the gutters are doing double duty.

How do you tell your gutters need clearing?

Usually from the ground, if you know what to look for. The signs that a trough is full or an outlet is blocked:

  • Water spilling over the front edge in steady rain rather than only in a cloudburst
  • A downspout that stays dry, or barely trickles, while the gutter above it is running
  • Plants, grass or seedlings visible along the gutter line
  • Dark streaks down the fascia board or the outside face of the gutter
  • Splash marks, mud or worn soil along the foundation below a run
  • A run that sags between hangers, often because wet debris has added weight

Any one of those is worth a look before the wet months. Two or three together usually mean the gutter has been full for a while, and the fascia behind it has been getting wet each time it overflows.

When does the rain actually test Anacortes gutters?

In November and December. The Western Regional Climate Center’s Anacortes station, whose record runs from 1892 to 2013, put November at 3.84 inches and December at 3.80 as the wettest months, against an annual mean of 26.70 inches. That annual total is lower than the 32.58 inches recorded at a station west-northwest of Mount Vernon, but a gutter does not care about the yearly sum. It cares about how much arrives in a single wet week, and the late-autumn months are when those weeks stack up.

A gutter full of wet litter going into those months is the one that spills over the front of the trough, soaks the fascia, splashes mud up the siding and dumps water at the foundation instead of carrying it to the downspout. The right moment to clear it is after most of the leaf fall and before the heavy rain starts, which in most years means October.

What does an Anacortes gutter visit include?

A standard clean covers:

  • Every run cleared by hand, trough and corners, with the debris bagged
  • Downspout outlets opened up where the packed silt collects
  • Each downspout flushed with plain water and checked for flow at the bottom
  • Roof edge debris picked off where it sits ready to wash back in
  • Spillage cleaned up from paths, decks and planting below
  • A note of anything wrong, such as sagging runs, loose hangers, split seams or leaking joints

Debris leaves with us unless you want it for compost. Our general gutter cleaning page sets out the service across the whole territory.

How are the gutters actually cleared?

By hand, from a ladder or from the roof edge where that is safer, working the run section by section. Wet material is scooped rather than blown. Blowing throws debris over the roof, the walls and the windows, and wet litter from a wooded Anacortes lot does not blow cleanly in any case.

Once the trough is empty we run water through it. That shows whether the run falls toward the outlet the way it should, or whether water pools in a low section. Then each downspout is flushed and we watch the bottom to confirm it flows. A downspout blocked partway down is cleared from the top or the bottom, whichever reaches the blockage. If water backs up where a downspout enters a buried pipe, we tell you, since clearing an underground line is outside a gutter clean.

Does a wooded lot need a different schedule from an open one?

Yes, and it is the main reason two quotes on the same street can differ. A house with no trees within reach of the roof mostly collects grit, roof granules and whatever the wind brings, and a single autumn visit keeps it running.

A house beside wooded ground, or with its own large trees leaning over the roof, gets a steady supply of litter through most of the year, not only in autumn. For that house, one clean in October and a second in late winter or spring is often what keeps the outlets open. Some very heavily treed lots need more. We would rather tell you that on the walk-round than sell you a single visit and leave you with an overflowing gutter in January.

Do older houses need anything different?

Sometimes. Anacortes has a real mix of ages: about 1,155 housing units, around 13% of the stock, were built in 1939 or earlier, even though the median home dates from 1989. Older houses can have gutters that have been replaced in pieces over the years, with mixed profiles, tired hangers and joints that have been patched more than once.

We take more care on runs like that. Ladders go against the wall or on standoffs rather than on a weak gutter lip, and we keep weight off sections that feel loose. Anything that looks like it is failing goes on the walk-round list. We are not gutter fitters, so the repair itself is for someone who is.

What drives the cost of gutter cleaning here?

The quote is given on site. What moves it:

  1. Length of the runs, which sets the baseline.
  2. Height. A single-storey ranch is quick. A two- or three-storey house on a hillside plot takes longer and needs more setting up.
  3. How much is in the trough. A gutter cleared last autumn is a quick job. One that has not been touched in several years under trees can hold compacted silt with plants growing in it.
  4. Roof pitch and access, which decide whether we work from ladders or from the roof.
  5. Downspout count and whether any are blocked.

A lot under trees costs more to maintain than one in the open, and the honest way to keep that cost down is regular visits so no single clean is a restoration job.

Where does the water and debris go?

Anacortes Municipal Code 18.30.050 bars anything other than stormwater from entering the city’s stormwater system. The town’s drainage empties to five water bodies: Guemes Channel, Burrows Bay, Fidalgo Bay, Padilla Bay and Similk Bay.

Gutter cleaning fits inside that easily, as long as it is done tidily. The flush uses plain water, sent down the downspouts the same way rain goes. Debris is bagged rather than washed along a driveway toward a street inlet, which is the easiest way for a gutter clean to put organic muck into a drain. Where a job adds a cleaning solution, as with brightening the outside of the gutters, that runoff is kept on the property. Our approach in full is on wash water and storm drains.

What if my gutters overflow or look stained?

Overflow in steady rain usually means a blocked outlet or a packed trough, occasionally a run that has lost its fall. The common causes and fixes are covered on overflowing gutters. If the trough is clear and it still overflows at one spot, the problem is often the hanger spacing or a sag, which we will point out.

The outside face of a gutter is a different issue. Black streaks down the front come from dirty water spilling over the lip and from organic growth, and they do not come off with a hose. That is a separate treatment, described on gutter brightening.

The test is not that it looks clean — it is that water has an unbroken path to the downpipe.

Should the roof be done at the same time?

If the roof has moss, yes. Soft washing and hand-lifting moss sends material down into the gutters, so the logical order is roof first and gutters second, on the same visit. Doing the gutters alone under a mossy roof means the first winter storms wash loose moss straight back into a trough you just paid to empty. The roof side of the job is explained on the Anacortes roof cleaning page.

Gutters questions from Anacortes homeowners

How often should gutters be cleared in Anacortes?
Once a year, in autumn, suits a house on open ground with nothing overhanging. A house beside the community forest or under its own mature trees often needs a second visit in late winter or spring, because litter keeps landing after the autumn clean.
Which month should I book?
October, or earlier if your trees drop early. November and December were the wettest months on the Anacortes station's long record, so clearing before then means the gutters are open when the heaviest rain arrives rather than after the first overflow.
Do you blow the debris out or clear it by hand?
By hand. Blowing gutter debris sprays it over the roof, the siding, the windows and the garden, and wet material does not blow cleanly anyway. We scoop it out, bag it, and take it with us unless you would rather keep it for compost.
What if a downspout is blocked underground?
We clear the downspout itself and confirm water leaves the bottom of it. If water backs up where the downspout meets a buried pipe, we tell you, because clearing an underground drain line is a separate job from gutter cleaning.
Can you fix a sagging or leaking gutter?
We are cleaners, not gutter installers. We will point out sagging runs, loose hangers, split seams and leaking corners on the walk-round, photograph them if you like, and leave the repair to someone who fits gutters.
Where does the flush water go?
Down your downspouts, the same route as the rain. We flush with plain water only, so nothing but water leaves the system. The debris itself is bagged and removed so it does not end up in a street drain, which in Anacortes leads to salt water.
Can gutters and roof be cleaned on the same visit?
Yes, and that is the order we prefer: roof first, then gutters. Roof work sends moss and grit down into the troughs, so a crew that does the gutters first has to come back and do them again.
